Where to Stay in Seoul: 5 Rules for Choosing the Right Area
Choosing a hotel in Seoul is not just about finding the cheapest room.
The area you stay in can change how much time you spend on subways, how easy it is to get back at night, and how convenient your airport transfer feels.
There is no single “best neighborhood” for everyone.
Instead, choose based on what kind of trip you are planning.
Here are five simple rules.

Rule 1 — First Trip + Classic Sightseeing? Choose Myeongdong or Jongno
If this is your first trip to Seoul and you want easy access to major sights, Myeongdong or the Jongno/Gwanghwamun area is a strong starting point.
Myeongdong is one of Seoul’s best-known shopping and tourism districts, with a mix of retail, food, culture, and easy access to central Seoul.
Jongno and Gwanghwamun put you closer to historic attractions such as Gyeongbokgung and Changdeokgung. Visit Seoul describes Gyeongbokgung as the main palace of the Joseon Dynasty and lists Changdeokgung as a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
Choose this area if:
- it is your first visit
- palaces and traditional Seoul are high on your list
- you want central sightseeing
- you prefer shorter rides to many classic attractions
The rule
First trip + major sights? Stay central.
Rule 2 — Nightlife, Cafés and a Younger Vibe? Choose Hongdae
Hongdae feels very different from central Seoul.
Visit Seoul describes it as a lively area for music, art, pop culture, and nighttime activity, especially popular for moving easily from daytime exploring into evening entertainment.
Hongdae is a good fit if:
- you like cafés and street culture
- nightlife matters
- you want a younger atmosphere
- you expect to stay out later
- you prefer a neighborhood with plenty going on after dark
The rule
If your day does not end after dinner, Hongdae may fit your trip better than a quieter sightseeing district.
Rule 3 — Modern Seoul, Shopping and Business? Choose Gangnam
Gangnam is a good match if your idea of Seoul is modern shopping, large commercial areas, nightlife, and newer city districts.
Official Seoul tourism information describes the areas around Gangnam Station and Samseong as major shopping and entertainment hubs with an active nighttime atmosphere.
Gangnam may suit you if:
- shopping is a major part of your trip
- you have business in southern Seoul
- you prefer modern neighborhoods
- COEX, Jamsil, Apgujeong or nearby areas are important to your itinerary
The trade-off is distance.
If most of your trip is focused on palaces, Bukchon, Jongno, or western Seoul, staying in Gangnam can mean more time crossing the city.
The rule
Choose Gangnam because your plans are in Gangnam — not simply because the name is famous.
Rule 4 — Airport Access Matters? Look at Hongdae or Seoul Station
If you have an early flight, late arrival, or simply want fewer airport-transfer headaches, Hongdae and Seoul Station deserve extra attention.
Airport Railroad services connect the Incheon Airport corridor with central Seoul, including Seoul Station and Hongik University Station on the route. Official Airport Railroad station information also shows these stations as part of the line toward Incheon Airport.
This matters if:
- you are staying only a few nights
- you have heavy luggage
- airport convenience is a priority
- you plan to use AREX
Seoul Station is especially practical for travelers who want a major transport hub, while Hongdae combines airport access with restaurants, cafés, and nightlife.
The rule
Early flight or short trip? Airport convenience can matter more than neighborhood atmosphere.
Rule 5 — Don’t Choose a Hotel by Price Alone
This may be the most important rule.
A hotel that looks cheaper can become annoying if it is:
- far from the nearest subway station
- uphill with luggage
- several transfers away from your main destinations
- near the wrong side of a large station
- a long walk from the exit you actually need
Seoul’s stations can be large, and the difference between being “near a station” and near the right station exit can matter.
So before booking, check:
1. Nearest subway station
2. Subway line
3. Station exit number
4. Walking distance from the exit
5. Whether your main attractions require multiple transfers
The rule
A slightly more expensive hotel in the right location can save more time than a cheaper hotel in the wrong one.
Quick Decision Guide
Choose Myeongdong / Jongno if:
You are visiting Seoul for the first time and want classic sightseeing, shopping, and a central base.
Choose Hongdae if:
You want cafés, nightlife, music, younger energy, and convenient airport-rail access.
Choose Gangnam if:
Your plans focus on modern Seoul, shopping, business, or southern Seoul attractions.
Choose Seoul Station area if:
Transport connections and airport access matter more than neighborhood atmosphere.
What About Other Seoul Neighborhoods?
These five rules are not saying that these are the only good places to stay.
Seoul has many other great areas, including:
- Insadong
- Itaewon
- Dongdaemun
- Jamsil
- Yeouido
- Euljiro
- Seongsu
But for a first-time traveler, starting with trip style + transport convenience makes the decision much easier.
You can always narrow it down later.
The KoreaRule
Don’t ask “What is the best area in Seoul?”
Ask:
What do I want to do most?
Where will I spend my evenings?
How important is airport access?
How close is the hotel to the subway?
The best neighborhood is the one that fits your trip.
