Incheon Airport to Seoul: 5 Rules for Choosing AREX, Bus or Taxi
You land at Incheon Airport, collect your bags, and then face your first big Korea travel decision:
How should you get to Seoul?
There is no single answer that works for everyone.
The fastest option may not take you closest to your hotel.
The cheapest option may require another subway transfer.
And the most expensive option can sometimes make sense when several people are sharing the cost.
Instead of asking which transportation method is “best,” use these five rules.
Quick Comparison
| Option | Usually Best For | Main Advantage | Main Trade-off |
|---|---|---|---|
| AREX Express | Travelers headed toward Seoul Station | Fast, direct airport-to-Seoul Station ride | You may still need another transfer |
| AREX All-Stop | Budget travelers or hotels near AREX stations | Low cost and frequent service | More stops and subway-style seating |
| Airport Bus | Hotels near a bus stop, travelers with luggage | Fewer transfers and luggage storage | Traffic can affect travel time |
| Taxi | Groups, heavy luggage, door-to-door travel | Direct to your accommodation | Highest cost |
AREX connects both Incheon terminals with Seoul. The Express runs nonstop to Seoul Station, while the All-Stop service also serves places such as Hongik University and Gongdeok.
Rule 1 — Going to Seoul Station? AREX Is Hard to Beat
If your hotel is near Seoul Station, AREX is the most straightforward rail option.
The Express Train runs nonstop between Incheon Airport and Seoul Station. Current Seoul city guidance lists travel times of about:
- 43 minutes from Terminal 1
- 51 minutes from Terminal 2
with trains departing roughly every 20–40 minutes.
The All-Stop Train takes longer but costs substantially less and stops at useful locations including Hongik University, Gongdeok and Seoul Station.
The rule
Hotel near an AREX station? Take the train before assuming you need a taxi.
Rule 2 — Check Your Hotel Before Choosing the Airport Bus
Airport buses are especially useful when a route stops close to your accommodation.
Incheon Airport currently lists many Seoul-bound routes serving areas such as:
- Myeongdong
- City Hall
- Dongdaemun
- Gangnam
- COEX
- Jamsil
- Yeouido
- Wangsimni
among others.
This can be much easier than taking a train and then dragging large luggage through one or two subway transfers.
But do not choose the bus just because your hotel is “in Seoul.”
Check the actual bus stop first.
A bus that drops you several blocks away may not be easier than AREX plus one short transfer.
The rule
If an airport bus stops close to your hotel entrance, the bus can be the easiest luggage-friendly option.
Rule 3 — Heavy Bags Change the Answer
A route that looks fastest on a map is not always easiest with two large suitcases.
AREX is convenient, but once you arrive at Seoul Station or another rail station, you may still need to:
- transfer to another subway line
- use elevators or escalators
- walk from the station
- manage luggage through crowds
Airport buses generally allow large luggage to be stored below the bus, while taxis take you directly to your accommodation.
So think about door-to-door effort, not only travel time.
The rule
More luggage = fewer transfers become more valuable.
Rule 4 — For 3–4 People, Compare the Taxi Cost
A solo traveler will usually see a big price difference between public transportation and a taxi.
For a group, the calculation changes.
Seoul currently publishes fixed-zone fares for designated International Taxis between Incheon Airport and Seoul. Sedan fares vary by Seoul zone, roughly from ₩70,000 to ₩95,000, depending on the destination.
Regular taxis use metered fares, and nighttime surcharges may apply. Incheon Airport currently notes Seoul taxi nighttime surcharges between 22:00 and 04:00, with the highest surcharge during 23:00–02:00.
If three or four travelers split one taxi, the per-person difference can become more reasonable — particularly with multiple bags.
The rule
Traveling as a group? Compare the total taxi price, not just the per-person train fare.
Rule 5 — Late Arrival? Check the Last Train Before You Land
This is the rule first-time visitors most need to remember.
Do not assume trains and daytime buses will still be running after immigration and baggage claim.
Incheon Airport operates dedicated late-night Seoul bus services, including routes toward areas such as Gangnam Express Bus Terminal, Cheongnyangni, Dongdaemun and Gwangnaru. Current official schedules show departures continuing after midnight on several routes.
That means arriving late does not automatically mean you need a taxi.
But late-night routes are more limited than daytime transportation.
The rule
Late flight? Check the actual final train and night-bus schedule before choosing your transport plan.

AREX Express or All-Stop?
This choice deserves one extra rule.
Choose AREX Express if:
- Seoul Station is your destination
- you want a reserved-style, nonstop airport train
- saving some travel time matters more than the fare difference
Choose AREX All-Stop if:
- you want the lower-cost rail option
- your destination is near Hongik University, Gongdeok or another AREX station
- you do not mind additional stops
Current Seoul city information lists the Express fare at ₩13,000 one way and the All-Stop fare at approximately ₩4,150–4,750.
Don’t Take an Unofficial Ride Offer
If you choose a taxi, use the official taxi stands.
Incheon Airport specifically warns travelers about illegal solicitation and excessive charges from vehicles posing as taxis, and advises passengers to use designated taxi stands.
This one really is a rule worth remembering:
Ignore random transportation offers inside the terminal. Follow the airport signs to the official taxi area.
The KoreaRule
Don’t choose your airport transportation by asking:
“Which one is best?”
Ask these instead:
Where is my hotel?
How much luggage do I have?
How many people are traveling?
What time will I actually leave the airport?
Then use the simplest option for your situation.
Before You Leave the Airport
- Hotel near Seoul Station → Check AREX
- Hotel near an airport-bus stop → Check the bus
- Lots of luggage → Avoid unnecessary transfers
- 3–4 travelers → Compare taxi cost
- Arriving late → Check last train + night bus
- Taking a taxi → Use the official taxi stand
