Korean Express vs Intercity Bus: 5 Rules for Booking the Right Bus
Planning to travel from Seoul to another Korean city?
Trains aren’t your only option. Korea has an extensive long-distance bus network that connects major cities, smaller towns, and destinations without convenient railway access.
But there’s one detail that often confuses first-time visitors: express buses and intercity buses are not exactly the same thing.
They may use different booking websites and depart from different terminals—even when you’re heading to the same city.
Here are five simple rules to help you book the right bus and reach your destination without confusion.

Rule 1 — Express or Intercity? Check Your Destination
Korea has two main types of long-distance buses.
| Express Bus | Intercity Bus | |
|---|---|---|
| Korean name | 고속버스 | 시외버스 |
| Typical route | Major cities and expressways | Major cities and smaller regional destinations |
| Intermediate stops | Usually no stops in other cities | May stop in other towns or cities |
| Booking | KOBUS and supported partners | Bustago, TxBus and supported partners |
Intercity buses can also operate direct routes, so don’t assume every intercity journey involves multiple stops.
If you’re traveling between major cities, search for express buses first to see whether a suitable direct service exists.
If you’re visiting a smaller town or can’t find a convenient express route, check the intercity bus network. You may discover a direct connection that doesn’t require traveling through another major city.
The KoreaRule: Search both types when necessary. Choose the route that actually reaches your destination.
Rule 2 — Don’t Go to the Wrong Terminal
This is one of the most important rules for traveling by bus in Korea.
Seoul has several major long-distance bus terminals. Some are close together, while others are in completely different parts of the city.
Major bus terminals in Seoul
| Terminal | Nearest subway station |
| Seoul Express Bus Terminal | Express Bus Terminal, Lines 3, 7 and 9 |
| Central City Terminal | Express Bus Terminal, Lines 3, 7 and 9 |
| Seoul Nambu Terminal | Nambu Bus Terminal, Line 3 |
| Dong Seoul Terminal | Gangbyeon, Line 2 |
These are major terminals, not interchangeable departure points. Check the terminal printed on your specific booking.
Seoul Express Bus Terminal and Central City are particularly easy to confuse because both connect to the same subway station. They are separate terminals serving different routes.
For example, Seoul Express Bus Terminal serves many routes toward southeastern Korea, while Central City serves many routes toward southwestern Korea. Other routes depart from Seoul Nambu or Dong Seoul.
Before leaving your hotel, copy the exact departure terminal from your ticket into NAVER Map or KakaoMap.
Also check your arrival terminal. A city can have more than one bus terminal, and the one you arrive at may be some distance from your hotel.
The KoreaRule: Check both terminal names before you travel—not just the departure and arrival cities.
Rule 3 — Use the Right Booking Website
Express and intercity buses have different official booking systems. International booking platforms also offer selected routes, often with additional language and payment options.
Bus Ticket Booking Links
KOBUS — Express buses
Search express bus schedules, select seats and make reservations.
Official Website ↗Bustago — Intercity buses
Search participating intercity routes and book available departures.
Official Website ↗TxBus — Intercity buses
Another official reservation system covering participating intercity routes.
Official Website ↗Klook — International booking platform
Search supported Korean bus routes using international payment options.
Booking Website ↗How to book your bus
The exact screens differ between booking services, but the general process is similar.
- Choose your departure and arrival terminals.
- Select your travel date and preferred departure time.
- Check the available bus services, fares and seat classes.
- Enter the passenger information and choose seats where available.
- Complete payment and save your booking confirmation.
KOBUS, Bustago and TxBus offer multilingual booking information, including English. However, the available routes, overseas card acceptance and registration requirements can differ by platform.
If a payment fails, don’t immediately repeat it. Check whether the reservation was created and whether your card was charged.
If a particular route isn’t available on one intercity booking website, try the other system or check directly with the terminal.
International platforms such as Klook and Go Hanpass are additional options for supported routes, but you should still compare the booking conditions and final price.
The KoreaRule: Find your route first, then choose a booking service that supports your payment method.
Rule 4 — Compare Departure Times and Seat Classes
Once you’ve found the correct route, don’t book the first bus you see.
Check the departure time, expected journey duration, arrival terminal and seat class.
Depending on the service, you may find these options:
| Korean | English | What to expect |
|---|---|---|
| 일반 | Standard | Regular seating |
| 우등 | Excellent / Luxury | Fewer, wider seats on many services |
| 프리미엄 | Premium | Higher-comfort seating on selected routes |
Not every route or operator offers every class. Prices also vary by distance, service and departure time.
For a short trip, a standard seat may suit your plans. For a longer journey, compare the seat layout and price difference before deciding.
Also allow enough time to reach your departure terminal. A slightly later bus from a terminal close to your hotel may be more convenient than an earlier departure across the city.
Check the booking’s cancellation and change conditions, particularly during busy holiday periods.
The KoreaRule: Compare the full journey and seat options before confirming your ticket.
Rule 5 — Check Your Ticket Before Boarding
Booking successfully doesn’t always mean you can board using only the confirmation email.
Some reservations provide a mobile ticket or QR code. Others require you to collect or print a ticket at the terminal.
Follow the ticket-collection instructions for your chosen service. If collecting a ticket, bring the payment card and booking information where required.
When you arrive, look for the electronic departure boards and find your bus’s platform number.
Check your departure time, destination and assigned seat before boarding. Try to reach the correct platform at least 5–10 minutes before departure, allowing extra time if you need to collect a ticket.
One more thing: Restroom breaks
Korean long-distance buses generally don’t have onboard toilets. Longer journeys may include a stop at a highway service area, known as a hyugeso (휴게소).
Use the terminal restroom before boarding, and check whether your particular route includes a rest stop.
The KoreaRule: Confirm your ticket format, terminal, platform and seat before boarding.
The KoreaRule
CHOOSE → CHECK TERMINAL → BOOK → COMPARE → BOARD
Find the right route, confirm both terminals, check your payment and ticket requirements, and arrive with enough time to board.

FAQ
What’s the difference between an express bus and an intercity bus in Korea?
Express buses typically travel between cities using expressways without intermediate city stops. Intercity buses serve a wider range of destinations and may stop along the way, although direct intercity services also exist.
Can foreigners book Korean bus tickets online?
Yes. Several official booking systems offer English-language interfaces, and international platforms such as Klook and Go Hanpass support selected bus routes. Overseas card acceptance and registration requirements depend on the booking service.
Can I pay for bus tickets with an international credit card?
Some booking services support international cards, but acceptance isn’t identical across all websites and routes. Check the payment options before confirming. If online payment isn’t available, check whether you can buy a ticket at the terminal.
Do I need to print my bus ticket?
Not always. Some bookings offer mobile tickets, while others require ticket collection at the terminal. Follow the instructions on your booking confirmation.
Can I use T-Money to board a long-distance bus?
Don’t assume your rechargeable T-Money transit card can be tapped to board an express or intercity bus. These services generally require a ticket for a specific departure. Book or purchase the appropriate ticket in advance.
Do Korean long-distance buses have toilets?
Generally, no. Many longer services stop at highway rest areas, but the arrangements depend on the route. Use the restroom before departure.
