Korean Restaurant Waitlist Rules: 5 Things Tourists Should Know
You’ve found a popular Korean restaurant, but when you arrive, there’s no obvious line outside. Instead, there’s a tablet near the entrance and several people looking at their phones.
Should you wait in line, enter a Korean phone number, or make a reservation online?
Many popular restaurants in Korea use digital waitlists or reservation systems. Some require advance reservations, while others let customers join a queue using a kiosk or an app.
If it’s your first time, here are five simple rules to help you get a table without confusion.

Rule 1 — Check the Entrance Before You Wait
Don’t assume that standing outside a busy Korean restaurant means you’re officially in line.
First, look near the entrance for a waiting tablet, QR code, registration sign, or reception desk.
You may see these Korean words:
| Korean | English |
|---|---|
| 웨이팅 | Waiting / Waitlist |
| 대기 등록 | Join the waitlist |
| 대기 번호 | Queue number |
| 예약 | Reservation |
| 마감 | Closed / Registration ended |
Some restaurants use digital waiting systems even when no customers are physically standing outside.
If you aren’t sure what to do, show a staff member this simple question:

The KoreaRule: Check the restaurant’s waiting system before joining a physical line.
Rule 2 — No Korean Phone Number? Try CATCHTABLE Global
Some Korean restaurant waiting systems require a local phone number, which can make registration difficult for international visitors.
CATCHTABLE Global offers an alternative at participating restaurants.
It’s an international version of a Korean restaurant reservation and waitlist service. Travelers can create an account using Google, Apple, or email without a Korean phone number. The service also supports multiple languages and international payment cards for eligible reservations.
How to get started
- Download CATCHTABLE Global or open its official website.
- Create an account using one of the available sign-in methods.
- Search for the restaurant you want to visit.
- Open its listing and check whether reservations or remote waiting are available.

Not every restaurant uses CATCHTABLE. If the restaurant has a different waiting system that requires a Korean phone number, ask the staff whether they can help you register.
The KoreaRule: Prepare CATCHTABLE Global before visiting popular restaurants, but check which system each restaurant uses.
Rule 3 — Remote or On-Site? Know the Difference
There are two common ways to join a digital restaurant waitlist.
Join before you arrive
Some restaurants let you join their waitlist through CATCHTABLE Global before reaching the restaurant.
Search for the restaurant and look for the Join Remote Waitlist option. When available, you can see how many groups are ahead of you and follow your waiting status.
Register at the restaurant
Other restaurants only accept waiting registrations in person.
Visit the restaurant, find its waiting tablet or reception desk, and follow the registration instructions.
Both options are described in the Korea Tourism Organization’s CATCHTABLE guide. Importantly, a restaurant appearing in the app does not automatically mean it supports remote waiting.
If you join a remote waitlist, check how long it may take to reach the restaurant. Joining remotely doesn’t guarantee an available table immediately upon arrival.
The KoreaRule: Check whether you can join the queue remotely or need to register in person.
Rule 4 — Watch Your Queue Number
Once you’ve registered, keep track of your place in line.
With CATCHTABLE Global, you can monitor your waiting status through the app and receive relevant notifications. Depending on the service, updates may also arrive by email.
You may have time to explore nearby shops or visit a café while waiting, but don’t go too far.
Queue times can change when customers cancel or tables become available sooner than expected.
Return to the restaurant according to its instructions. If you miss your turn, staff may cancel your registration or ask you to join the queue again.
The KoreaRule: Keep checking your queue number and return before your table is ready.
Rule 5 — Check Deposit and Cancellation Rules
A restaurant waitlist and a confirmed reservation are not the same thing.
| Waitlist | Reservation |
|---|---|
| Joins a queue | Books a date and time |
| Entry depends on table availability | A table is arranged for your confirmed booking |
| CATCHTABLE waitlists do not normally require a deposit | Some restaurants require an advance deposit |
CATCHTABLE Global’s remote and on-site waiting services do not require reservation deposits, according to the Korea Tourism Organization. Many restaurant reservations, however, may require one.
Before confirming a reservation, check the deposit amount, cancellation deadline, refund conditions, and no-show policy.
Also remember that having a waitlist number does not mean your table is guaranteed at a particular time.
The KoreaRule: Know whether you’ve joined a queue or booked a table, and check any payment conditions.
The KoreaRule
CHECK → REGISTER → WAIT → WATCH → ARRIVE
Find the waiting system, register correctly, monitor your queue, and return when it’s your turn.
