KTX Rules Tourists Should Know: 7 Things Before You Board
KTX is one of the fastest and easiest ways to travel between major cities in Korea.
Seoul to Busan, Seoul to Gyeongju, and Seoul to Daegu are all popular KTX routes for travelers.
But KTX does not work quite like the Seoul subway.
You need a separate ticket, an assigned train and seat, and a little planning before you arrive at the station.
Here are seven things worth knowing before your first KTX trip.

1. Book Early — Especially for Busy Travel Days
You do not always need to book KTX weeks in advance.
But waiting until the last minute can be risky.
KORAIL normally opens ticket sales one month before departure, and popular trains can sell out — especially on:
- Friday evenings
- Sunday afternoons
- Public holidays
- Long weekends
- Major Korean holiday periods
If you already know your travel date, booking early also gives you a better choice of departure times and seats. KORAIL currently allows ticket purchases beginning at 7:00 a.m. one month before departure.
You can buy tickets through the KORAIL website, KORAIL Talk app, ticket machines, or train-station ticket offices.
For most international visitors, booking online before arriving at the station is the easiest option.
Book early. Pick your seat.

2. KTX Needs Its Own Train Ticket
Your T-Money card is useful for subways and buses.
It is not your KTX ticket.
To ride KTX, you need a ticket for a specific train journey.
That ticket contains information such as:
- Departure station
- Destination
- Departure time
- Train number
- Car number
- Seat number
KORAIL tickets can be purchased online, through KORAIL Talk, from ticket vending machines, or at railway stations. KORAIL specifically notes that regular railway tickets are not sold at subway stations.
So do not arrive at Seoul Station expecting to tap your T-Money card at a gate and choose any KTX.
Think of KTX more like a reserved intercity train.
T-Money ≠ KTX ticket.

3. Check the Station, Train, Car, and Seat
Before boarding, check more than just the destination.
Two trains may leave for the same city at different times, and large stations may serve several types of trains.
Your useful four-point check is:
Station → Train → Car → Seat
Once you reach the platform, signs usually show where different cars will stop.
If your ticket says Car 8, for example, walking toward the correct boarding position before the train arrives can make boarding much easier.
Then check your seat number after entering the car.
If you reserved a seat with a KORAIL PASS, keep the seat reservation information available as well. KORAIL requires passengers using the pass to carry a valid pass and passport, plus the seat reservation ticket when a seat has been reserved.
One extra detail: some KTX train types handle seat direction differently. For example, KTX-Sancheon trains have rotatable seats.
Station. Train. Car. Seat.

4. Don’t Arrive at the Last Second
KTX stations are usually straightforward.
But large stations such as Seoul Station or Busan Station can take a little time to navigate — especially if you have luggage.
KORAIL allows tickets to be sold surprisingly close to departure:
- Online: until 20 minutes before departure
- Ticket machines: until 10 minutes before departure
- Station ticket offices: until departure
That does not mean arriving at the station one minute before your train is a good idea.
You may still need time to:
- Find the correct departure board
- Locate the platform
- Use an elevator with luggage
- Walk to the correct car position
- Buy food or drinks
- Find your seat
For a first KTX trip, arriving a little early makes the experience much easier.
You do not need airport-style check-in time.
Just give yourself enough time to find the train without rushing.
Ticket ready. Platform early.

5. Keep Your Luggage Manageable
KTX is convenient with luggage, but there are limits.
KORAIL’s official carry-on guidance says each passenger should be able to carry their own luggage and may bring no more than two pieces.
Your luggage must also not occupy a passenger seat or block the aisle.
So if you are traveling with large suitcases:
- Keep them out of the aisle
- Use available luggage areas where appropriate
- Do not place a suitcase on another passenger’s seat
- Board with luggage you can reasonably handle yourself
There is also a newer safety rule worth knowing.
Since July 1, 2026, KORAIL has restricted lithium-battery-powered personal mobility devices such as electric scooters and electric bicycles, as well as portable lithium batteries over 160Wh, on its trains. Ordinary phones, laptops, and smaller everyday power banks are not included in that restriction.
For most tourists with normal suitcases and electronics, this will not change anything.
But travelers carrying unusual battery equipment should check the current rules before departure.
Two bags. Keep aisles clear.

6. Don’t Expect a Dining Car
Planning to eat a full meal in the dining car?
Do not count on it.
KORAIL states that KTX trains do not have a dining car. Standard KTX trains do have vending machines for drinks and snacks, along with facilities such as restrooms and wireless internet.
For a longer journey, it can be easier to buy food before boarding.
Major railway stations usually have plenty of options nearby, so you can pick up:
- A drink
- Snacks
- A sandwich
- Kimbap
- A simple takeaway meal
Then bring it with you.
You do not need to prepare a huge meal for a short KTX ride.
The useful point is simply not to board hungry while expecting restaurant-style service on the train.
No dining car. Plan ahead.

7. KORAIL PASS Does Not Cover Every High-Speed Train
The KORAIL PASS can be useful for international visitors taking several train trips.
But there is an important distinction:
KORAIL PASS does not cover SRT.
KORAIL’s official pass information specifically excludes:
- SRT
- Metropolitan railway/subway services
- Certain temporary tourist trains
KTX and SRT are both high-speed trains, so first-time visitors can easily assume they work under the same rail pass.
They do not.
If your itinerary shows an SRT train, do not assume your KORAIL PASS will be accepted.
Check which operator you are booking before paying.
Also remember that buying a KORAIL PASS does not automatically mean you have reserved a particular seat. KORAIL provides a separate seat-reservation process for pass holders, with reservations becoming available one month before departure.
KORAIL PASS ≠ SRT.

Before You Board
For most travelers, taking KTX is easy once you understand the basic system.
Before heading to the station, remember:
- Book popular trains early.
- Buy a separate KTX ticket.
- Check your station, train, car, and seat.
- Give yourself time to find the platform.
- Keep luggage out of seats and aisles.
- Buy food before boarding if you want a proper meal.
- Do not assume KORAIL PASS works on SRT.
The biggest difference from Seoul’s subway is simple:
KTX is a reserved intercity journey, not a tap-and-ride transit system.
Once you understand that, the rest is straightforward.
