Last Subway in Seoul? 5 Rules for Getting Home After Midnight

You’re enjoying a night out in Hongdae or Gangnam when you check the time and realize the last subway might be leaving soon.

How will you get back to your hotel?

Fortunately, Seoul has late-night buses and taxis. But choosing the right option requires a little preparation, especially if you’re unfamiliar with the city.

Here are five simple rules for getting home after midnight.

Vertical infographic showing five Seoul night transport rules: check the last train, find an N-bus, compare bus and taxi, check taxi fares, and save your hotel.

Rule 1 — Check the Last Train Before You Go Out

The last subway in Seoul doesn’t leave at the same time from every station.

Departure times vary depending on the subway line, station, direction, destination, and day of the week.

If your journey requires a transfer, you also need to make sure the connecting train is still operating.

Before heading out, open NAVER Map or KakaoMap and search for a route back to your hotel at your expected return time.

Check the last available connection, not just the departure time of the first train.

During major holidays and special events, Seoul sometimes extends subway operating hours. For example, the city announced temporary extensions for September 26–27, 2026, during the Chuseok holiday. These extensions don’t apply to ordinary nights.

The KoreaRule: Check the last complete subway journey to your hotel before going out.

Rule 2 — Missed the Subway? Look for an N-Bus

If the subway has already stopped running, check whether a Seoul night bus can take you home.

Seoul’s late-night buses are called Owl Buses, and their route numbers begin with the letter N.

Look for an N-number

N37 is an example of a night-bus route number. Check which route actually serves your destination.

Seoul’s night-bus network operates through the late-night and early-morning hours, but individual routes have different stops, departure times, and intervals.

To find a suitable bus, enter your hotel’s address into NAVER Map or KakaoMap. Select public transportation and check the routes available at your intended departure time.

Look carefully at the bus number, boarding location, direction, and estimated arrival time.

The published adult Owl Bus fare is ₩2,500.

The KoreaRule: Search for an N-bus using your exact location and hotel address.

Rule 3 — Compare the Night Bus with a Taxi

A night bus may cost considerably less than a taxi, but the cheapest option isn’t always the most convenient.

Before deciding, compare the entire journey.

WalkingMay require a walk from the stopUsually drops you near your hotel

Imagine you’re returning to your hotel after midnight.

One N-bus might take you close to your accommodation without a transfer. Another route might require a long wait and a 20-minute walk.

In that situation, compare the bus journey with the estimated taxi fare and travel time.

Also consider your luggage, group size, weather, and how familiar you are with the area.

The KoreaRule: Compare the total journey, including waiting and walking, rather than looking at the fare alone.

Rule 4 — Know the Late-Night Taxi Surcharge

Taxi fares in Seoul increase during late-night hours.

For standard sedan taxis, the surcharge starts at 10 PM and ends at 4 AM. The highest surcharge applies between 11 PM and 2 AM.

TimeSurchargeBase fare
10–11 PM20%₩5,800
11 PM–2 AM40%₩6,700
2–4 AM20%₩5,800
4 AM onward0%₩4,800

These are initial fares for the first 1.6 km. Distance, waiting time, tolls, journeys outside Seoul, and different taxi services can increase the final price.

For example, a standard taxi journey starting at 11:30 PM will have a higher nighttime surcharge than one starting at 10:30 PM.

Some taxi-hailing services and premium vehicle types have different pricing. Check the estimated fare and vehicle type in the app before booking.

The KoreaRule: Check the time, taxi type, and estimated fare before booking.

Rule 5 — Save Your Hotel and Have a Backup Plan

Getting home after a night out is much easier when you’ve prepared your destination in advance.

Save your hotel’s Korean name and full address in your preferred map app. It is also useful to take a screenshot in case your mobile connection stops working.

Before leaving your hotel, identify the nearest subway station and check whether a night bus serves the surrounding area.

If you decide to take a taxi, choose a safe pickup location where the driver can stop. When using a taxi-hailing app, confirm the vehicle’s license plate before entering.

One important distinction: Seoul’s city N-buses and Incheon Airport’s nighttime buses are different services. If you’re arriving at the airport late at night, check the airport’s transportation information separately.

The KoreaRule: Save your hotel address and prepare a backup route before going out.

The KoreaRule

CHECK → FIND → COMPARE → CHECK FARE → GET HOME

Check the last subway, find a night bus, compare your options, and keep a taxi as a backup.
