Landing in Korea: 7 Things to Do Before You Leave the Airport
You’ve landed in Korea, collected your luggage, and made it into the arrivals hall.
Before heading to your hotel, take a few minutes to get the essentials ready: internet access, a little Korean cash, transportation, and your accommodation details.
These seven simple steps can make your first hour in Korea much smoother.

1. Get Connected Before You Leave the Airport
Your phone will probably become one of your most useful travel tools in Korea.
You may need it almost immediately to check directions, translate Korean text, find your hotel, look up transportation, use a taxi app, or contact your accommodation.

That is why getting connected before leaving the airport is a smart first step.
International travelers generally have several options:
- International roaming from your home carrier
- A Korean prepaid SIM card
- An eSIM
- Airport Wi-Fi
If you already installed an eSIM before your flight, activate it after landing and make sure mobile data is working.
If you prefer a physical SIM, prepaid SIM cards are available at Incheon Airport. Free Wi-Fi is also available around the airport, which can be useful while you are getting everything set up.
You do not need to figure out which Korean mobile plan is absolutely perfect before starting your trip.
For now, the important thing is simple:
Make sure you can get online before you leave.
We can compare Korean SIM cards, eSIMs, roaming plans, and data packages in a separate guide later.

2. Get a Little Korean Won
Korea is extremely card-friendly, so you do not need to carry a large amount of cash.
But arriving with no Korean won at all can still create unnecessary inconvenience.
The goal here is not to exchange a lot of money at the airport.
You simply want a small amount of cash available for transportation and unexpected situations.

One important example is T-Money.
Standard prepaid T-Money cards are commonly purchased and topped up using cash, and foreign-issued credit cards may not work for those transactions through the usual channels.
That means having a little Korean won ready can make getting your transportation card much easier.
Cash can also be useful at some small businesses, older machines, markets, or other situations where a foreign card may not work as expected.
If you already brought Korean won with you, there is no reason to exchange more just because you have arrived.
And if you do exchange money at the airport, you do not need to exchange your entire travel budget there.
Think of cash as backup, not your primary way to pay.
A little cash helps.

3. Get Your Transit Card Ready
If you plan to use buses or subways during your trip, it is a good idea to prepare your transportation card early.

For many first-time visitors, T-Money is the easiest general-purpose option.
T-Money can be used on public transportation in Seoul and many other parts of Korea, making it much easier than buying a separate ticket every time you ride a subway or bus.
You can generally buy and reload T-Money at convenience stores and other designated locations.
One thing is worth understanding from the beginning:
A transportation card does not necessarily replace every transportation ticket in Korea.
Your everyday buses and subways may use T-Money, while some airport transportation services or special trains can have their own ticketing systems.
You do not need to memorize all of those differences at the airport.
Just get your basic transportation card ready so you can use ordinary public transportation once you reach the city.
Transit card ready = less confusion later.

4. Choose How You Will Get Into the City
Before walking out of the airport, decide how you are actually getting to your accommodation.
For travelers heading from Incheon International Airport to Seoul, the three main choices are usually:
AREX → Airport Bus → Taxi
There is no single option that is best for everyone.
Your destination, luggage, arrival time, group size, and budget all matter.

Choose AREX if…
AREX can be a good choice if your destination connects conveniently to Seoul’s rail network.
The airport railroad provides both Express and All-Stop services.
The Express Train is designed for direct travel between Incheon Airport and Seoul Station, while the All-Stop Train serves multiple stations along the way.
If your hotel is near Seoul Station, Hongik University, Gongdeok, or another convenient rail connection, the train may be one of the simplest options.
It can also help you avoid road traffic.
The downside is luggage.
If reaching your hotel requires several subway transfers, stairs, or a long walk after getting off the train, the cheapest or fastest-looking rail option may not necessarily be the easiest one.
Choose an Airport Bus if…
An airport limousine bus can be particularly convenient when it stops close to your hotel.
You can usually store larger luggage in the bus luggage compartment and avoid carrying suitcases through subway stations.
That makes airport buses attractive for travelers with larger bags or accommodations that are inconvenient to reach by train.
The main trade-off is road traffic.
Travel time can vary depending on the route and traffic conditions.
Choose a Taxi if…
A taxi costs more, but it gives you door-to-door transportation.
That can be especially useful if:
- You have heavy luggage
- You are traveling with children
- Several people are traveling together
- Your accommodation is far from a train or airport-bus stop
- You simply want the easiest route after a long flight
For a solo traveler with light luggage, public transportation may make more sense.
For a family of four with several suitcases, a taxi can suddenly become much more attractive.
So do not ask only:
“Which option is cheapest?”
Also ask:
“Which option fits my trip?”
Train, bus, or taxi? Choose what works for you.
5. Arriving Late? Check What Is Still Running
Late-night arrivals need a little more planning.
Do not assume that because Incheon Airport is open, the train or airport bus you planned to use will still be running.
AREX and airport buses operate according to schedules, and the last departure depends on the specific service and route.
There are also dedicated late-night transportation options, including certain airport buses.
The important thing is to check the current schedule for your exact route before your travel day.

Also remember:
Your flight arrival time is not the same as the time you leave the airport.
After landing, you may still need to:
- Taxi to the gate
- Go through immigration
- Wait for your luggage
- Clear customs
- Buy or activate a SIM
- Get Korean won
- Buy or reload a transportation card
- Walk to the train, bus, or taxi area
A flight that lands late in the evening can therefore leave you looking for transportation considerably later.
If you have a late arrival, check your transportation plan before flying.
And if your original option is no longer operating, look for an official late-night bus or taxi instead of improvising after you arrive.
This is a topic worth covering separately later because late-night routes and schedules can change.
For now, remember one rule:
Arriving late? Check the last ride.
6. Save Your Accommodation in Korean
Before leaving the airport, make sure your hotel information is actually useful once you are outside.
Do not rely only on an English hotel name such as:
“ABC Boutique Hotel Seoul.”
Instead, save:
- The Korean name of your accommodation
- The Korean street address
- The phone number
- A map pin

This is particularly useful when taking a taxi.
A hotel may have a Korean name that sounds very different from its English name.
There may also be multiple branches of the same hotel or accommodation brand.
Showing the Korean address or map location is often much easier than trying to pronounce an unfamiliar destination to a driver.
A simple screenshot can also help.
Save your accommodation details somewhere you can access even if your internet connection temporarily fails.
For example, you could keep one screenshot showing:
Hotel name → Korean address → phone number → map location
That small preparation can be surprisingly useful after a long flight when you are tired, carrying luggage, and just want to reach your room.
Save the Korean address.
7. Taking a Taxi? Use the Official Taxi Stand
If you decide to take a taxi from Incheon Airport, follow the airport signs to the designated taxi stand.
This is more than a convenience tip.
Incheon International Airport warns travelers about illegal solicitation and overcharging by unauthorized vehicles and advises passengers to use designated taxi pickup areas.
Official taxi stands are organized by terminal and taxi type.
Depending on the airport area, you may see different categories such as regular taxis, deluxe or jumbo taxis, international taxis, and other designated services.
If someone approaches you inside the terminal offering a ride, there is no need to follow them.

Instead:
Follow the TAXI signs → Go to the designated pickup area → Take the appropriate official taxi.
That is especially useful after a long flight.
When you are tired, carrying luggage, and focused only on getting to your hotel, it can be tempting to accept the first transportation offer you receive.
There is no need.
Simply follow the official airport signs.
Taxi? Use the official stand.

Frequently Asked Questions
Should I buy a SIM card at Incheon Airport?
You can.
Prepaid Korean SIM cards are available at Incheon Airport, and travelers can also prepare an eSIM before arriving if their phone supports it.
If you already have roaming or an eSIM working, there is no need to buy another SIM simply because you are at the airport.
The important thing is to make sure you have reliable internet access before heading into the city.
Do I need Korean cash immediately after landing?
You probably do not need much.
Most everyday purchases in Korea can be made by card, but having a small amount of Korean won is useful for transportation cards and situations where a foreign card may not work.
Think of cash as a backup rather than your primary payment method.
Should I get a T-Money card at the airport?
If you plan to use buses and subways, getting your transit card ready early can make your trip easier.
You can also buy one later at many convenience stores and other designated locations.
The important thing is to have a transportation card available before you start relying heavily on public transit.
What is the best way to get from Incheon Airport to Seoul?
There is no single best option.
AREX can work well for rail-connected destinations.
An airport bus can be convenient if it stops close to your hotel.
A taxi provides door-to-door service and can be particularly useful for groups, families, or travelers with heavy luggage.
Choose based on your destination and travel situation rather than price alone.
What if my flight arrives late at night?
Check the current operating schedule for your exact transportation option before traveling.
Regular train and airport-bus services do not operate all night, although late-night transportation options may be available.
Remember to allow extra time for immigration, baggage claim, customs, and other arrival tasks.
Why should I save my hotel address in Korean?
It makes communication easier.
Taxi drivers or local staff may recognize a Korean address more quickly than an English hotel name, particularly if the hotel has multiple branches.
Saving a map pin and screenshot also gives you a backup if your internet connection fails.
Is it okay to take a ride from someone who approaches me inside Incheon Airport?
The safer and simpler approach is to follow official airport signs to the designated taxi stand.
Incheon Airport specifically advises travelers to use official pickup areas and warns about unauthorized transportation solicitation.
If someone approaches you offering a ride, you do not need to accept.
